Jumbo rocks my world

We’ve heard rumors of a magical mega store, one with aisles upon aisles of food (even peanut butter! which can’t be found anywhere else), clothes, wine, candy, electronics, you name it. The lighting is said to be a special type of fluorescent and the shopping carts resemble those of IKEA. You know, the carts that roll sideways if they’re empty because they’re meant to be so heavy from all of the stuff you’ve piled in there that only then will they roll straight, which of course should always be one’s goal when shopping.

If you’re thinking this magical mega store is a Super Wal-Mart, then think again. Some even compared this place to Super Target, but in my book, no place can compare to Super Target. Why, you ask? Because no other place has a popcorn and coke “combo” for $1, has red shopping carts or security staff who ride around on a special Target themed Segway. But anyways. This is the South American alternative to SWM: Jumbo. I think the word “jumbo” is more appropriate for a mega store name. You can only expect good things from a store called Jumbo. And Jumbo definitely delivered.

After a bit of online research, we set out to find this magical store, the big brother store to Disco. When we arrived, we were so giddy that the security guard actually followed us around. Maybe it was because I took pictures of everything, like an undercover from a competitor’s store. But who could possibly compete with Jumbo?

Look at all of those cash registers!

Now, you’ve already been privileged enough to hear my rant about razors, so we won’t go over that again. But we should talk about the cheese selection in this place. Or better yet, let me show you.

Naturally, our next stop was the wine section. If the huge wine displays all around the store weren’t already enough, there were also two special wine areas. One was a massive area for all price ranges and the second was a special “cave” of wine, appropriately named “cava jumbo”. The latter was temp controlled at a pleasant 72F and had Pavarotti singing on a flat screen. This is where the big boys were shelved.

Jumbo also has another perk: South America’s largest mosque is next door. And it is beautiful. You can get a pretty good view of it from the escalator on the way up to Jumbo.
